Clare College of Transformative Education
When Hopewell Hospice opened in 1994, a series of seminars on Palliative Care were organised. From this start, numerous courses have been provided each year under the name of Clare College of Transformative Education. This educational resource for the Gold Coast community now provides many courses and seminars on subjects based on an integral educative model aiming to deepen, enrich and transform the lives of participants. Subjects include: Grief Counselling, Children and Grief, Palliative Care, Stress Reduction, Self-empowerment, Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness, as well as a variety of human potential programs for volunteers and staff. Clare College trains volunteers in these subject areas, as well as health professionals and staff of government agencies, in addition to other community members.
Founder Deirdre Hanna, with Ian Mavor, established the College with the belief that the spiritual aspects of life, whether it be Christian or other spiritual doctrines, were often overlooked in healthcare. They affirmed the need to offer programs that empathised and emphasised life force & energy, meaning & purpose, and the sense of both individual identity and community connectedness. As an extension of the local programs, Deirdre and Ian have presented lectures and workshops at National and International Conferences on Palliative Care and Counselling. Clare College also provides a space for a community of people who want to gather and explore the deeper aspects of their faith, hope, spirituality and beliefs through programs such as Explorations of Spirituality and Worship, Sunday Meditations: Practical Application of the Spiritual Path and Heartstormers.
