Hopewell Hospice is the Gold Coast’s only hospice which opened in 1994 at Hope Island. Hopewell Hospice is a charitable, non-denominational, palliative care facility servicing the Gold Coast and surrounding regions. With the word ‘hospice’ linked in meaning to ‘hospitality’, Hopewell Hospice is for people with life-limiting illnesses who require permanent accommodation at the end stage of life or shorter-term respite care.

Although the health system aims to encourage those with terminal illnesses to return home, this assumes that family or other carers are available, and able to provide the level of assistance needed. Caring for a dying family member is a difficult task - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. There is also a lot of uncertainty at that time, and deciding on what is the ‘best’ thing to do can cause frustration, guilt, worry and fear.

The Gold Coast has long been an attractive location for retirees to spend their golden years on our golden sands. Many consequently do not have the necessary support to stay at home and, in effect, are made homeless by their illness. This is where Hopewell Hospice steps in to help, providing a home-style alternative to hospitalisation, and freeing carers from the onerous task of nursing their loved one, enabling them to spend quality time without the burden of physical duties. Families of hospice residents are welcome at the hospice at any hour of the day or night, as are their friends and pets, and everyone is encouraged to become part of the Hopewell family. People ranging from 17 to 97 years of age have benefited from the hospitality provided by Hopewell.

In 2005, a new hospice opened at THE HOPEWELL CENTRE, adjacent to Paradise Kids House in Arundel. With eight beds in a home-like environment, the hospice provides holistic palliative and respite care, 24-hour on-site nursing, ancillary services and follow-up bereavement services.

The new Hopewell Hospice building, furniture, facilities and beautiful gardens were made possible through the wondrous support of the community. A Living Well Centre is also being developed. Here, those young and old diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses can come to join support groups and wellness groups, and find healing through meditation, guided imagery, Reiki, art, music, massage and counselling. Whilst professional medical staff are employed in the hospice, Hopewell relies almost entirely on community support to operate so if you are willing to donate your time, a gift, or money, then please contact us or click on the Donate link above.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and are gratefully received through the secure Bendigo Bank web site.
